I used to believe that
I had fragments of memories
But now I recognize it for what it is
Shrapnel
Well said, Dante.
Just read this Dante - it's no wonder we run from/try to suppress trauma memories isn't it? Often hard for non-survivors to understand that, I suppose because it seems like we are hanging onto the past and should just be able to let go of it.
Maybe it's a good image to use - that trauma wounds are like metal fragments that continue to cause internal damage until they're treated. No-one would suggest a soldier leave an IED wound untreated and just get on with life, why ask that of a relational trauma survivor?
