Title: How to access repressed memories
Post by: Stussy7 on February 14, 2025, 04:20:14 AM
A lot of people here are saying they were able to slowly remember memories that had been erased...I would love to know how. I want to remember!

Is any particular type of therapy helpful for this?

Do you have a therapist yet Stussy? This is the kind of issue to work with a professional on IMO.  Sometimes if we push to get access to our memories we can go too fast and then it's overwhelming, whereas most trauma therapists know to titrate (go slowly).

I agree with Kizzie.

I have been slowly recalling memories and my therapist has been instrumental in helping me do so safely and with meaning.

The general thought is that our memories are hidden from us for a reason. Our brains are helping us cope by hiding events that traumatized us once and could traumatize us again if they come out at the wrong time. A good therapist can help bring out memories in a safe manner and can help us cope with the trauma that comes out with the memory.

I second Kizzie and PapaCoco.

Repressed memories coming up too fast can be overwhelming to the point of retraumatisation. It's happened to me - mostly by inexperienced, non-trauma-informed therapists deciding all that stuff needs to come to the surface, altho in the end it was mostly just a tiny little bit, but it was still too much! Happened several times and always set me back.
