Title: DBT
Post by: Stussy7 on March 06, 2025, 11:23:44 AM
Hi everyone,
Has anyone found DBT (dialectical behavioural therapy) therapy helpful at all?

I have been told I am too unstable to work on my trauma, so I am starting DBT soon to be able to manage my emotions. Then hopefully I can do trauma work.

I'm not sure because here where I am they don't necessarily tell you what kind of therapy you're doing. But I do know about having to do stabilisation before I was deemed able to move onto trauma work. Except here they meant stabilising your whole life before you could move on, rather than being able to do a few exercises.

It's frustrating isn't it...you want to address your trauma so you can heal, but you have to be stable first.
It makes sense...it's just frustrating!
What do you mean by stabilising your whole life? Like stable housing, relationships etc?

That kind of thing, yeah. Not being in a relationship with an abuser, or if as in my case still being in contact with FOO (albeit in different countries), then having a well-established and good circle of friends in own country, feeling safe in apartment/house, some form of financial security (even if 'just' welfare, but still knowing it's there), if possible a job though or if not then a purpose (e.g. bringing up children).

I was held back too long from addressing the trauma, which is frustrating looking back on, but it is what it is.

I wish the best for you - that you can stabilise fast enough for your therapist to move onto the actual trauma with you, nice and fast.

Thank you Stussy. I've been dealing with a lot for a while, I have a lot of therapy under my belt and I'm still not well. I hope you manage better.
