Title: Notifications
Post by: sweetsixty on July 05, 2016, 09:38:23 AM
Can you explain please why I'm not getting any notifications for anything even though I've checked my settings and they seem to be right?

Apologies if they are not but sometimes terminology in the computing world is bizarre lol I should know I lectured in computing!

Yes, I've had that problem too, unless I click "Attachments and other options" and then click "Notify me of replies." on each and every post. Until I figured this out, I had to go back to the list of my posts and click the title to get back to past threads.

Personally I don't use notifications.
So you'll have to enlighten me here a bit.
I assume you want notifications via your e-mail account, right?
And you have checked the boxes, selected the threads you want notifications for, and don't get e-mail from the site?
As far as I understand from the "notifications" tab/page in my "account settings", one must 'tick' the boxes. And perhaps also hit the 'notify' option at the top of the thread. But I could be wrong.
I have now 'subscribed' to this thread, so I'll see if I will get anything.
So please DO reply to this post of mine, if only to check the system.

The only thing I do get notifications of is PM's. And the works fine.

Yours,
the technical advisor.

Thanks Dutch Uncle, I've done all of that,  that is clicked all the boxes and asked for notification in each individual one.

I don't get any via email which is what I would like on threads I am following, otherwise you have to keep checking all new posts or those you have posted on.

Hi SweetSixty - I'm not sure why that's happening either so Dutch I've posted a request for Eclipse in the Admin forum to have a look  and asked him to reply to you by PM or here as I will be out for a bit (surgery) shortly.  He has Admin rights here so if he can identify the problem he can fix it. It may take a bit so hang in there and we'll see if we can get to the bottom of this.

Try clicking on Forum Profile (up top next to your avatar)

Then on the menu click Modify Profile->Notifications

You should see some pull down menus with options selected for when you wish to receive/not receive notifications from the board - looks like you currently have them selected in a way that would suppress some of the notifications.

See if that helps.

I know I'm terribly late to reply once more. This has been caused by a massive dissociative period.
I beg you pardon.

That said, I did get an e-mail notification on the 5th of july regarding your response Sweetsixty. So 'subscribing' to this thread did the trick for me.

Yours,
Dutch Uncle.

Thanks Dutch Uncle, it's still not sorted I think I must be thick! I have everything switched on now and still no emails, although notifications appear in my profile now.

:'(

I'm sorry I can't help you.

Perhaps you access the site via smart-phone or tablet, and I have no knowledge of either.

I hope and wish this site will still be of aid to you in your recovery without the notifications working as you'd wish.

Yours,
Dutch.

PS: the only other thing I can think of is that your e-mail notifications end up in a spam-folder somewhere.

Hi SweetSixty:

I had a look at your profile and permissions and I cannot see any reason why you aren't receiving notifications.  Here is what you have checked off:

•   Request notification on replies
•   Request notification on new topics
•   Receive forum newsletters, announcements & notifications by email
•   Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic
•   When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email
•   For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me: Instantly
•   For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of: Replies and Moderation

The only thing I can think of is that you started using a different email address than the one you expect to receive notifications in (you can check this by going into your profile), or as Dutch has suggested they are ending up in your Spam folder.

Can you check those two things and let us know?

It really is a bit trickier on the phone. I mostly just click around till I stumble across what I'm after.

Nope had same email address for years and years so not that at all, crazy!

It's just that having an email notification saves you having to keep returning to the site if some thing important comes up. Like this topic today I only saw because I checked in to see new posts!

Not on my phone often, usually an iPad.

Hmmm, the last thing I can think of is that in your profile your email address starts with a capital whereas it's all small letters if I'm not mistaken.  I'm not sure if that would bounce them or not.  I'm sure you checked, but they're not going to your spam folder are they?

Thanks Kizze and yes done all that, I've changed my email address to all lower case although most systems accept upper and lower these days for email addresses, it's only usernames and passwords that can be affected by capitalisation.

And no they are not in my spam or trash folder lol. As you know I know quite a bit about computing having lectured in that area for 20 years, never come across this issue before!

Thanks for trying to help though, I just thought it might be an anomaly on this system.

I guess I'll just have to keep checking in to see posts etc.  :heythere:

Sorry about that Sweet Sixty, I've run out of ideas (i.e., reached the limit of my 'expertise' with this platform), but I'll see if Eclipse from OOTF has any other ideas.

I appreciate your time Kizzie, but don't worry I'll just make sure I keep checking in.

Thanks for everyone's help

I'm closing this thread. If a solution will be found to this problem, those who can will have the necessary tools to open this thread again.

If somebody from outside the site-management team is able to provide a fool-proof solution, they may start another thread.  ;D
