Title: Personality Disorder of victim
Post by: Rainstorm11 on October 08, 2019, 06:52:28 AM
Recently in therapy it has been suggested that due to the traumas I might have borderline personality disorder? I've read about it and known people diagnosed with it. But, it's been very emotional especially since I haven't had therapy for weeks cancelled on both ends.
I am left to see part of myself in this disorder and on edge. My therapist cancelled this week but I asked if she can see me another time. I feel like I can't talk to anyone else about it.

Cptsd and borderline personality disorder have some overlapping symptoms, and some of us on here have been misdiagnosed with BPD before finding out about cptsd.

It sounds as if the possibility of having BPD is upsetting you? Also it's hard to hear when you have no help atm, with your T appointments being cancelled. I'm sorry about that. I'm standing with you and sending support from here at the forum.

This is from our glossary on BPD, and it may help to demystify a bit?: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) – Individuals with CPTSD are often misdiagnosed with BPD. The cluster of symptoms associated with BPD includes: transient dissociation; a feeling of chronic emptiness; intense anger; identity disturbance; impulsivity; self-harming behaviours; and, affective instability. While these overlap with both PTSD and Complex PTSD in the DSM-V, BPD is considered distinct from both based on two additional diagnostic criteria: terror of abandonment or rejection, and alternating idealization and devaluation of others. Further, while the etiology of both PTSD and CPTSD relates solely to trauma, the development of BPD is multi-factored in nature, often stemming from severe attachment insecurity and disorganization, and as a personality disorder extends beyond both PTSD and CPTSD. Being in limbo is hard. Maybe some of the resources or threads on the forum can help you feel a bit better in limbo?

My understanding is that a therapist cant make a diagnosis, only a psychiatrist can do that.

So for a therapist to suggest you might have a psychiatric illness is not right and proper.

I am a little cautious about therapists, I would encourage you not to put much weight in what you were told, it's not helpful to conjecture about things in this way.
